12/6-12/7: Miami Earns Split with Grand Valley State University
Miami took on Grand Valley State University this past weekend in a pivotal matchup in the Great Midwest Hockey League. Grand Valley is currently ranked #2 in the central region in M2 ACHA. On Friday night, Grand Valley showed why some people consider them to be the best team in the nation. From the first puck drop, Miami was overmatched with the speed and fore-check of their opponents. Miami was still in striking distance for the majority of the game being down only 1-0. However, Miami was unable to capitalize on a number of power plays. Grand Valley continued to play solid hockey and scored three more goals for a final score of 4-0. The loss marked the first time since the 2011-2012 season that Miami had lost on home ice. The loss was not the only bad news Miami received that game. Freshman forward Tim Spicola broke his arm after blocking a shot from the point. Luckily, he will be back in the line-up when games resume next semester.
On Saturday night, Miami was out to prove they could play a better all-around hockey game. Grand Valley jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period. However, Grand Valley took a 5 minute major penalty for spearing to give Miami an unlimited amount of opportunities to score on the power play. Unlike Friday night, Miami was able to capitalize three times on the power play during this contest. Led by Junior Evan Frank, Miami jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. Miami quickly put another goal on the board courtesy of Sophomore Andrew Dower. Grand Valley stormed back however to make it a 4-3 lead for Miami headed into the third period. Grand Valley tied the game early in the third period on a power play goal. However, Miami would respond again on the power play with another goal by Frank, giving him a hat trick for the game. Junior Brad Annas would score a shorthanded empty net goal with :05 seconds left in the game. Although it took Annas three tries to put the puck in the net, after hitting the post on his first attempt, he eventually sealed the game for Miami. The final score of the game was 6-4 in favor of Miami.
Miami finishes the first semester of the year with a 14-2-0-1 record. They will return to Miami a week before the new winter time finishes, for a week of practice and home games against The University of Toledo January 24th and 25th.
